Event: YALC 2019 Day Two (Saturday)

Day Two was cut a little short for me due to illness, but I still managed to get my hands on a few great titles. I didn’t manage to meet anyone on this day, only managing to meet Derek Landy overall, but he was still lovely to meet. Anyways, here’s what I managed to get my hands on!

1. Hello Me, It’s You by Hannah Todd (Paperback, Hello Me, It’s You)
Hello Me, it’s You is a collection of letters by young adults aged 17-24 about their experiences with mental health issues. The letters are written to their 16-year-old selves, giving beautifully honest advice, insight and encouragement for all that lays ahead of them.

2. Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly (Paperback, Scholastic)
Isabelle should be blissfully happy – she’s about to win the handsome prince. Except Isabelle isn’t the beautiful girl who lost the glass slipper and captured the prince’s heart. She’s the ugly stepsister who’s cut off her toes to fit into Cinderella’s shoe … which is now filling with blood.
When the prince discovers Isabelle’s deception, she is turned away in shame. It’s no more than she deserves: she is a plain girl in a world that values beauty; a feisty girl in a world that wants her to be pliant.

3. Perfectly Preventable Deaths by Deirdre Sullivan (Paperback, Hot Key Books)
Everyone in Ballyfran has a secret, and that is what binds them together…

4. The Merciless I & II by Danielle Vega (Paperback, Razorbill)
Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.
Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.
Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next….

5. We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizel (Paperback, Macmillan Childrens)
Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways.

6. Brave the Page by National Novel Writing Month (Paperback ARC, Viking)
Partly a how-to guide on the nitty-gritty of writing, partly a collection of inspiration to set (and meet) ambitious goals, Brave the Page is the go-to resource for middle-grade writers. Narrated in a fun, refreshingly kid-friendly voice, it champions NaNoWriMo’s central mission that everyone‘s stories deserve to be told. The volume includes chapters on character, plot, setting, and the like; motivating essays from popular authors; advice on how to commit to your goals; a detailed plan for writing a novel or story in a month; and more!

7. Lorali by Laura Dockrill (Paperback, Hot Key Books)
Looking after a naked girl he found washed up under Hastings pier isn’t exactly how Rory had imagined spending his sixteenth birthday. But more surprising than finding her in the first place is discovering where she has come from.

8. Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr (Paperback, HarperVoyager)

9. Darkspell by Katharine Kerr (Paperback, HarperVoyager)

Book Three of the celebrated Deverry series, an epic fantasy rooted in Celtic mythology that intricately interweaves human and elven history over several hundred years.

11. Dragonspell by Katherine Kerr (Paperback, HarperVoyager)
